Evening Out

" Evening Out "

by Suzán Jiván

Made of folded steel
encased in concrete
overcoated by black stucco
in an upstairs space

evening out
in a house plan
with fragments
of get aways
cast in place

exposing the ancient
adjacent separations
weaving through medieval
alleyways like past days
masquerading as today

within ill-placed stairways
and constrained layouts
at the risk of collapse
in unmitigated layers

right in the historic core
along with a cannon ball
replete with its bomb shards
in oak and terra cotta

redesigned by desire
found outside on site
while dining
beneath a climbing
white wisteria vine...

Conceived with Live in Mind

"Conceived with Live Rounds in Mind"

by Suzán Jiván

Conceived with live rounds in mind
unconfined by ideals in headlines
far beyond far-fetched plot lines
sometimes like mime
coming out of hiding
as highly stylized, slyly designed
skyscraper-to-skyscraper zip lines
subverting to rivals
far more disquieting, holding fire...

Fiscally Frisky Haiku

" Fiscally Frisky Haiku "

by Suzán Jiván

I

Tight reins on spending
more powerful than morphine
amassing fortunes

II

Signature dishes
celebrated seediness
bodybuilding gyms

III

Fiscally frisky
indiscriminate pink slips
sip hand-made bitters...

Atomized Haiku

" Atomized Haiku "

by Suzán Jiván

I

Intimate, compact
dreamily blurry pictures
atomized, flattened

II

Over the shoulder
shedding light, social circles
remains hard to say

III

Crusty, granular
shadowy haze fills the space
stiffly official

IV

White-striped black teacups
well-pedigreed possessions
decompressed presence

V

Glue-based distemper
obvious, consequential
rich and indolent

VI

Inches by inches
the biggest pieces
fenced in leafless trees...

Greater Visibility Haiku

" Greater Visibility Haiku "

by Suzán Jiván

I

Ageless innocence
greater visibility
with pithy language

II

Whomever happens
stylistically inventive
as a honeyed drawl

III

Elfin sidelong grin
while pickling the literal
with long fuzzy ears

IV

Imbibing bitters
a certain amount of risk
writing specialist

V

Bruising and intense
amiable urgency
no small achievement...

Hair-Metal Haiku

" Hair-Metal Haiku "

by Suzán Jiván

I

Jukebox turned junky
insipidly hand wringing
high hopes, low prospects

II

Forgotten events
a little bit hair-metal
bearable sidekicks

III

The cultural fray
self-cannibalization
mostly without shame

IV

Whispering, writhing
X-rated society
seek to replicate

V

Enunciation
uncharacteristic heat
stale body routines

VI

Real-life analogue
token of diversity
neo-Puritan...

Late Winter, Warm Spells Haiku

" Late Winter, Warm Spells Haiku "

by Suzán Jiván

I

In the minds of babes
seeming both deeply engaged
and ready to bolt

II

Plants forearms, hands clasped
parted hair down the middle
straight to the infant

III

Happening within
a welling up from the depths
fossil collections

IV

As assemblages
including bottom-dwellers
helmet-like front shells

V

Matching upward trends
including bottom-dwellers
late winter, warm spells...

Grievously Clear

" Grievously Clear "

by Suzán Jiván

Homes in various corners
always been the all-important
headquarters sought
all because of places or origin

freewheeling, interlocking
lengthening, compelling
clicking, scratching, tapping
expressed as tactful parallels
with implicitly tragical impacts

underpinned with timbres
alternately abrasive
sweetly meditative
grievously clear...

Drinking in Art

" Drinking in Art "

by Suzán Jiván

Drinking in art
along with light
greatly admired
like heightened
colors over time

with no concession
to distance
slightly diminished
by the last minutes
while reaching
instinctively
towards the intensely
physical

as diarists and antagonists
staring at flashing neon
like everyday objects
bringing to mind the bizarre
as both a prologue and an encore

an ordinary nobody
finding a sidekick
like a refugee
while inventing
a series
of moronic doubles
in mega-gags

without comic aptitude
nonetheless being excluded
by hard-hitting news
while walking upright
and mis-using tools
as distinctly human
and profoundly moving...

Wild-Eyed Haiku

" Wild-Eyed Haiku "

by Suzán Jiván

I

Before going home
attempts to reassemble
vague remembrances

II

As retrospectives
oddest and most exotic
like ardent artists

III

All-around aesthetes
eager for art and gossip
hung on every word

IV

Immigrants ourselves
addressing mysticism
working with figures

V

Seated and standing
in fidgety renderings
of reinvention

VI

Tastes change quite a bit
attesting to preferences
wild-eyed, splayed painters...

Swimming in the Sea

" Swimming in the Sea "

by Suzán Jiván

Swimming in the sea
occupying the bottom floors
slated to stay open
by staying under the radar

as a finished product
outstandingly larger-than-life
whole rows behind
especially outrageous

like latecomers turning the tables
seemingly incapable
and mostly exasperating
as so many mad fancies

cogently dramatic
outstripped by linear simplicity
while sinking slowly
into thick quicksand as a running gag...

Singular Impressions

" Singular Impressions "

by Suzán Jiván

Singular impressions
becoming unsettled
by multiplying effects
piled up into a breathless welter
spun off by an enemy
while crouching on decks
mute but expressive
as signature imperfections
of tiny dots
anonymously shot
and left unedited

Traditional Timbres

" Traditional Timbres "

by Suzán Jiván

Traditional timbres
with eerie harmonics
ringing out as neo-
romantic mezzo sopranos

gorgeously exhausting
excluding encores
after rollicking with cool shards
of dissonant suavity

paradoxically yanking
at blood-splattered
blankets on badly
battered bedsteads

rattling in livid yellowy light
being jerked back to life
by begrimed outliers
over all of time...

Upending the Day

" Upending the Day "

by Suzán Jiván

Upending the day
soft-pedaling
against joylessness
in squeaky leather
with a missed connection

initially failing
much of the past
increasingly hapless
synthetically revelrous
and overly protective

appearing to be headstrong
while putting if off
with the witch next door
becoming stick figured
with stuck-open eyelids...

Biddies Haiku

" Biddies Haiku "

by Suzán Jiván

I

Eyes touch each other
long abdomen, single point
just the head exposed

II

Conspicuous eyes
distinctive golden markings
open over ground...
